Package Forwarding USA to Brazil: US Address and Shipping

USA to Brazil Package Forwarding

Package forwarding from the USA to Brazil works like this: you rent a real US street address, US stores ship your orders there using ordinary domestic shipping, our staff receive and combine them into one box, and we forward that box to your door in Brazil by DHL, FedEx, UPS, or USPS. You pay Brazilian import taxes on arrival, and your CPF goes on every shipment.

Key Takeaways

  • A US forwarding address lets you check out at American stores with domestic US shipping, including stores that refuse to ship to Brazil at all.
  • Combining several orders into one carton typically cuts the international shipping bill 30% to 40% per batch. Consolidation is free on our Silver and Gold plans.
  • Brazil taxes almost every imported parcel. Expect federal import tax plus state ICMS, calculated on the goods and the freight together. Rates have changed several times since 2023, so confirm current figures with Receita Federal before a large purchase.
  • The recipient’s CPF (or CNPJ for a company) is required on shipments entering Brazil. No CPF, no clearance.
  • Correios and the express couriers handle customs differently. Correios is slower and you pay tax through its online portal. DHL, FedEx, and UPS clear the parcel themselves and bill you, usually faster.
  • Plans run $330, $450, or $595 per year, each with one bonus month on annual billing.

The Mechanics

How a US Address and Forwarding to Brazil Works

You get a personal suite number at our staffed business center in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. Anything addressed to that suite is received by our employees, logged to your account, and held until you tell us what to do with it. When you are ready, we pack it and ship it to Brazil.

1. A real US street address

Not a P.O. Box. It is a commercial street address at a USPS-approved Commercial Mail Receiving Agency, so USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, and Amazon all deliver to it. Retail checkouts treat it like any other American address. The background is in our virtual address guide.

2. Domestic delivery to your suite

The store ships inside the United States, often free. Our staff sign for the box, and you get a free email alert on every arrival, on every plan. Nothing waits on a porch.

3. Storage while you keep shopping

Each plan includes a free storage window: 30 days on Starter, 60 on Silver, 90 on Gold. That window is what makes batching possible. You buy over several weeks and ship once.

4. Consolidation

We remove outer retail cartons and excess packing, then combine your items into one dense box. Fewer boxes and less air mean a lower international bill. Details are on our package consolidation service page.

5. Customs paperwork

We prepare the export declaration with an item-by-item description, the real value, and your CPF. Accurate paperwork is the single biggest factor in how long a box sits at Brazilian customs.

6. Forwarding to Brazil

You pick the carrier from the discounted USPS, FedEx, UPS, and DHL rates we quote. You approve the price before anything leaves the building, and you get tracking when it does.

That is the entire service. The rest of this page is about doing it well: choosing the right carrier for Brazil, understanding what Receita Federal will charge, and packing your year of shopping into as few boxes as the rules allow. If you want the general version first, read how mail forwarding works and come back.

The Shopping Side

Why US Domestic Shipping Is the Whole Trick

Most American retailers are built to ship inside the United States and nowhere else. A US address turns you into a domestic customer, which opens up stores, prices, and free-shipping offers that a Brazilian delivery address never sees.

Stores that will not ship to Brazil

Plenty of large US retailers either do not offer international checkout or exclude Brazil from the countries they serve. The reasons are dull and practical: carrier contracts, brand territory agreements, and the cost of handling Brazilian customs returns. With a US address the question disappears. The store ships to Massachusetts, and the international leg is handled by people who do it every day. We cover the retailer side in detail in our guide to shopping in the USA and shipping internationally.

Free and cheap domestic shipping

Free shipping thresholds, membership shipping programs, and store pickup alternatives all assume a US destination. When the first leg of the trip costs nothing, your only real freight cost is the single international shipment at the end.

Stores that reject Brazilian cards

Some checkouts go one step further and decline cards issued outside the United States, or cancel the order after an address verification mismatch. A US address does not fix a card problem. For those cases our Personal Concierge service does: our US team buys the item for you for a flat $99.95 per purchase request, and it arrives at your suite like any other package.

One sales tax detail

US sales tax is charged according to the delivery address. Massachusetts exempts most everyday clothing from sales tax, subject to a per-item limit, which shoppers with apparel-heavy carts notice. Rules vary by product category, so check what applies to your order rather than assuming.

Receita Federal

Brazilian Import Rules You Need to Know

Brazil taxes imported consumer goods heavily, and a forwarded parcel is treated as an import by an individual. Budget for tax on nearly everything, put your CPF on every shipment, and treat any rate you read online (including here) as something to confirm with Receita Federal before you spend serious money.

We are a US shipping company, not Brazilian customs brokers or tax advisers. What follows is the practical picture our Brazil customers deal with. The authority is Receita Federal, and for postal parcels, Correios.

The simplified tax regime for individuals

Parcels imported by individuals for personal use are generally assessed under a simplified regime (Regime de Tributação Simplificada) up to a value ceiling set by Receita Federal. Under that regime a single federal import tax (Imposto de Importação) is applied to the customs value. Customs value means the goods plus the international freight plus any insurance, not the goods alone. The rate has historically been high by international standards. Above the ceiling, or for goods that look commercial, a formal import process with a broker applies, and that is a different project entirely.

ICMS on top

ICMS is the state-level tax, and it is charged in addition to the federal import tax. The states have moved toward a common rate for international parcels, but the figure has been revised and can differ by state. ICMS is also calculated “por dentro,” meaning the tax is part of its own base, so the effective percentage is higher than the nominal one. If the arithmetic surprises you at the Correios payment screen, that is usually why.

Remessa Conforme, and why it mostly does not apply to forwarded parcels

Remessa Conforme is a Receita Federal compliance program for cross-border e-commerce. Certified marketplaces and platforms collect the Brazilian taxes at checkout and send shipment data ahead of the parcel. In exchange, their parcels clear faster, and low-value orders bought through those platforms have qualified for a reduced federal rate. The thresholds and rates have changed more than once since the program launched in 2023.

Here is the part that matters for you: a box forwarded from your personal US suite was not sold through a certified platform. Plan for it to be assessed on arrival under the standard rules, with no reduced rate. If a small, cheap item is sold directly to Brazil by a certified platform, buying it that way can be the better deal. Forwarding wins on selection, on stores that do not serve Brazil, on higher-value goods where the rate is the same either way, and on combining many purchases into one freight charge.

CPF is mandatory

Brazilian customs requires the recipient’s CPF (or CNPJ for a business) on inbound international shipments. We put it on the declaration and the label data. The name on the shipment should match the name registered to that CPF. An American expat living in Brazil needs a CPF too, and most long-term residents already have one for banking and leases.

Exemptions are narrower than the internet says

You will read about a low-value exemption for gifts between individuals and about tax immunity for books and periodicals. Both exist in some form in Brazilian law, and both are applied more narrowly in practice than forum posts suggest. A parcel sent from a commercial forwarding address does not look like a gift between relatives. Do not plan a purchase around an exemption unless you have confirmed it with Receita Federal or a Brazilian customs broker. Our general primer on customs duties on forwarded packages explains how declared value, freight, and duty interact in any country.

A working estimate

Because published rates move, we suggest a method instead of a number. Add the price of the goods to the international freight quote. Apply the current federal rate from Receita Federal to that total. Apply your state’s ICMS to the result using the por dentro formula. Add the Correios dispatch fee or the courier’s clearance fee. If the landed total still beats the local Brazilian price by a margin you care about, ship it. For electronics and branded clothing it often does. For cheap, bulky items it often does not, and we would rather you know that before you buy.

Customs Handling

Correios vs. Express Couriers at Customs

Parcels sent by USPS are handed to Correios in Brazil and cleared through the postal customs channel. Parcels sent by DHL, FedEx, or UPS are cleared by the courier’s own brokerage team. The tax owed is the same in principle. The speed, the fees, and how you pay are not.

FactorUSPS to Correios (postal channel)DHL, FedEx, UPS (express channel)
Who clears customsCorreios presents the parcel to Receita Federal at a postal processing centerThe courier’s in-house brokers clear it, usually before or as it lands
How you are notifiedTracking status changes, and the parcel appears in the Correios “Minhas Importações” portal under your CPFEmail, SMS, or phone call from the courier with a payment link
How you pay taxOnline in the Correios portal, by boleto, card, or PixTo the courier, online or at delivery, depending on the carrier
Extra feesA fixed Correios dispatch fee (despacho postal) per parcelA clearance or advancement fee that may scale with the tax amount
Typical paceSlower and less predictable, with occasional long waits in inspectionFaster and more predictable, with door-to-door tracking
Freight priceUsually lower, especially for light parcelsUsually higher, more competitive on heavy consolidated cartons
Best forLow-value, non-urgent, lightweight shipmentsElectronics, higher-value batches, anything with a deadline

Two practical notes. First, register on the Correios site with your CPF before your first postal shipment, so the tax notice has somewhere to land. Parcels that go unpaid past the Correios deadline are returned to the sender, and a returned box means paying international freight twice. Second, with express couriers, reply to the broker’s messages the same day. Most express delays in Brazil are a broker waiting on a CPF confirmation or a product description, not the government.

Shipping Methods

Carrier Options From the USA to Brazil

We ship to Brazil with USPS, FedEx, UPS, and DHL at discounted rates, and you choose per shipment. There is no single best carrier. The right one depends on the weight of the box, the value inside, and how much a week matters to you.

CarrierStrength on the Brazil laneWatch for
USPS (delivered by Correios)Lowest cost for light parcels and documents; Priority Mail International and Priority Mail Express International both serve BrazilSize and weight limits, slower customs channel, tracking that goes quiet during inspection
DHL ExpressStrong brokerage in Brazil, fast door-to-door service, clear tax payment processDimensional weight pricing punishes large, light boxes
FedEx InternationalPriority and economy tiers, good on heavier consolidated cartonsClearance fees, remote-area surcharges outside major cities
UPS WorldwideComparable to FedEx, with saver and expedited tiersBrokerage charges, address precision (include CEP and a phone number)

We do not publish transit times as promises, because Brazilian customs decides the real schedule. When you request a shipment we quote every eligible service side by side, and you pick. For a wider look at how rates are built, including dimensional weight, see our international shipping savings guide. Customers in neighboring countries can compare notes in our regional guide to mail forwarding to Latin America.

Address format matters

Give us your Brazilian address exactly as Correios writes it: street and number, complement (apartment, block), bairro, city, state abbreviation, and the eight-digit CEP. Add a mobile number that accepts WhatsApp or SMS. Couriers in Brazil call before delivery more often than US carriers do, and an unanswered call can mean a second attempt days later.

Restrictions

What Not to Ship to Brazil

Three separate rulebooks apply to every box: what carriers refuse to fly, what the United States restricts for export, and what Brazil restricts for import. An item has to pass all three. Our full list lives at prohibited commodities for mail forwarding, and these are the categories that trip up Brazil shipments most often.

  • Hazardous goods. Perfume, nail polish, aerosols, and loose lithium batteries are dangerous goods for air transport. Some can move with special handling on certain carriers, and many cannot move at all.
  • Medicines, supplements, and cosmetics in quantity. Brazil’s health regulator, Anvisa, controls these. Personal-use quantities may be allowed with documentation such as a prescription. Commercial-looking quantities are stopped.
  • Used and refurbished goods. Brazil restricts the import of used consumer goods, and refurbished electronics can be treated the same way. Buy new, and keep the invoice.
  • Drones, radios, phones, and other wireless devices. Telecom equipment may require Anatel approval. Individuals importing a single phone for personal use usually get through, but check the current Anatel position before ordering anything unusual.
  • Firearms parts, replicas, knives, and tactical gear. Restricted on both ends. We do not ship them.
  • Food, seeds, plants, and animal products. Agricultural controls apply, and seizures are common.
  • Multiple identical items. Five of the same sneaker reads as resale, not personal use. That can push the parcel out of the simplified regime and into formal import.

If you are unsure, ask us before you buy. It costs nothing to send a product link through our contact page, and it is much cheaper than a US return.

The Numbers

Consolidation Math, Using Real Plan Prices

Consolidation typically cuts the international shipping cost 30% to 40% per batch. On a lane as expensive as the USA to Brazil, that saving usually exceeds the price difference between plans within the first few shipments.

Why one box beats four

International carriers charge a base amount for every parcel before weight even enters the equation, and they bill on dimensional weight when a box is large for what it holds. Four retail boxes mean four base charges and a lot of paid-for air. One repacked carton means one base charge and tight dimensions. On the Brazil lane there is a second effect: Correios charges its dispatch fee per parcel, and couriers charge clearance fees per shipment. One box means one fee.

The plan break-even

We will not quote freight here, because rates depend on weight, size, and the week you ship. Plan prices are fixed, so the comparison can be done with those alone.

  • The Starter Plan is $330 per year. Consolidation is available as a paid add-on.
  • The Silver Plan is $450 per year and includes free consolidation and free mail scanning.
  • The difference is $120 per year.

If consolidation saves 30% to 40% of your international freight, then $120 is recovered once your unconsolidated freight for the year would have reached roughly $300 to $400 ($120 divided by 0.40 is $300, and $120 divided by 0.30 is $400). Anyone shipping more than two or three multi-store batches to Brazil in a year is past that line, before counting the Starter add-on fees they no longer pay or the scanning Silver also includes.

Per-month view

Annual billing includes a bonus month, so each plan covers 13 months. That works out to about $25.38 per month on Starter, $34.62 on Silver, and $45.77 on Gold. Gold’s 90-day storage window suits shoppers who build one large quarterly box, which on this lane is often the cheapest rhythm of all.

The tax caution

One large box has one large declared value. Because Brazil’s simplified regime has a value ceiling, a consolidated carton that crosses it can land in formal import. Tell us your target value per shipment and we will split a batch into two cartons when that is the smarter move. Cheaper freight is not a win if it triggers a broker.

Documentation

Invoices, Declared Value, and Honest Paperwork

We declare what is in the box at the price you paid. We do not mark merchandise as gifts, lower values, or write vague descriptions, and no reputable forwarder will. In Brazil this is self-interest as much as ethics: Receita Federal reassesses parcels it finds implausible, and the penalty for under-declaration is charged on top of the tax you tried to avoid.

What good paperwork looks like

  • A specific description for each item: “men’s cotton t-shirts, 3 pieces,” not “clothing.”
  • The purchase price per item, matching the retailer’s invoice or order confirmation.
  • The recipient’s full name as registered with their CPF, plus the CPF number.
  • A complete address with CEP and a reachable phone number.

Save every order confirmation as a PDF. If customs questions a value, the fastest way out is sending the original invoice the same day. Customers who keep a simple folder of receipts per shipment rarely have a parcel held for long. For terms like customs value, dimensional weight, and commercial invoice, our mail forwarding glossary has plain definitions.

Be careful who you ship for

Your suite is for your own purchases. If someone online offers to pay you to receive and reship packages, that is a known fraud pattern, and the person holding the box carries the risk. We explain how it works in our piece on reshipping scams and parcel mules.

Americans in Brazil

For American Expats in Brazil

If you are an American living in Brazil, packages are the smaller half of the problem. The larger half is paper: bank cards, IRS notices, state tax letters, and the account statements that still assume you live in the United States. A staffed US address with scanning handles both.

Banking

US banks and brokerages want a US mailing address on file, and replacement debit and credit cards are mailed to it. Mail sent abroad from a bank is slow at best. With a US address, the card arrives at your suite, we alert you, and it goes out to Brazil by tracked courier. The longer discussion, including what banks tend to ask about, is in our guide to keeping a US bank account while living abroad.

IRS and state tax mail

US citizens file with the IRS wherever they live, and IRS notices carry response deadlines that start on the letter’s date, not the day you finally see it. On the Silver and Gold plans, mail scanning is free: we open the envelope on your instruction and send a PDF, so a notice is on your screen in São Paulo while the deadline is still comfortable. A mailing address does not decide your tax residency or your state filing obligations. Those questions belong with a tax professional, and our article on expat taxes, state residency, and mail explains where the line sits.

Everything else with a US return address

Social Security letters, voter materials, university transcripts, title documents, and the annual stack of 1099s all need a reliable landing spot. Most of it can be scanned and shredded. Originals that matter are forwarded by tracked courier, usually DHL or FedEx on this lane, because a passport-adjacent document is not the item to test the postal channel with. Our expat virtual mailbox guide walks through the full setup, and the pre-departure list is in the moving abroad mail and document checklist.

Small business owners

Expats who run a Massachusetts LLC from Brazil can use the same facility for business mail, and our Gold Plan is registered-agent compatible. The legal requirements are summarized in our guide to Massachusetts registered agent requirements. See current pricing for the registered agent service, and confirm entity questions with an attorney.

Real Patterns

Three Customers, Three Ways of Using the Address

The same suite number serves very different habits. These three patterns cover most of our Brazil accounts.

The quarterly shopper in Belo Horizonte

She buys clothing, running shoes, and children’s items from five or six US stores over about ten weeks, always during sales. Everything accumulates under Gold’s 90-day storage window. At the end she asks for one consolidated carton, checks the total declared value against the simplified regime ceiling, and ships by express courier. One freight charge, one clearance fee, one tax payment, four times a year.

The electronics buyer in Curitiba

He buys one or two items a year: a laptop, a camera lens. Value is high and volume is low, so consolidation matters less than insurance and speed. He uses the Starter Plan, ships each item by DHL or FedEx with full declared value, and pays the tax through the courier’s link the day it arrives. His comparison is simple: US price plus freight plus Brazilian tax, against the local shelf price. When the gap is not there, he does not buy.

The retired American in Florianópolis

He rarely shops. His account exists for a US bank, a brokerage, the IRS, and a pension administrator. Silver’s free scanning means almost nothing physical ever ships. Twice a year a small envelope goes out with a new card or an original document. For him the service is an expat mailbox service first and a package forwarder second.

Getting Started

How to Start: Step by Step

Setup takes one short online session and one notarized form. You can do all of it from Brazil.

Choose a plan

Pick Starter, Silver, or Gold on the plans page. Frequent shoppers usually want Silver for the free consolidation.

Complete USPS Form 1583

Federal postal rules require this notarized form, with two IDs, for every private mailbox in the US. Online notarization is accepted, and a Brazilian passport works as primary ID. Our Form 1583 guide covers it.

Get your address and shop

We issue your street address and suite number. Use it as the shipping address at US checkouts, with your name exactly as it appears on the form.

Request a shipment

Tell us which items to combine. We repack, quote the carriers, and ship after you approve. Your CPF goes on the paperwork, and tracking goes to your inbox.

Before your first box leaves

  1. Register on the Correios website with your CPF, even if you plan to use couriers. It takes a few minutes and removes a common cause of returned parcels.
  2. Send us your Brazilian address in Correios format with CEP and a mobile number.
  3. Save each retailer’s order confirmation as a PDF in one folder.
  4. Decide on a target declared value per shipment, after checking the current simplified regime ceiling with Receita Federal.
  5. Read the prohibited items list once, fully.
Pricing

Lessons Learned

Mistakes That Cost Brazil Shippers Money

Nearly every expensive Brazil shipment we see went wrong before the box left Massachusetts. These are the repeat offenders.

Shipping each order separately. Four small parcels mean four base freight charges and four clearance or dispatch fees. Wait, combine, and ship once.

Forgetting that freight is taxed. Brazilian import tax applies to goods plus freight. An expensive express service on a cheap item raises the tax as well as the shipping bill. Match the service to the value.

Ignoring dimensional weight. A pillow and a laptop can cost the same to fly. Bulky, light goods are rarely worth importing to Brazil, however good the US price looks.

Missing the Correios payment deadline. The parcel waits for a limited time and then goes back to the United States. Check the portal, or turn on its notifications.

Buying refurbished electronics. The discount disappears if the item is refused as a used good. Buy new.

Name mismatches. A parcel addressed to a nickname, or to a relative whose CPF you did not give us, stalls at clearance. Use the legal name tied to the CPF, every time.

Choosing a forwarder on the monthly fee alone. The subscription is the small number. Storage limits, consolidation fees, and repacking quality decide the real annual cost. Our comparison of what to look for is in the best international mail forwarder guide.

Honest Advice

When You Do Not Need a Forwarder

A forwarding address is not the cheapest route for every purchase, and we would rather say so than sell you a plan you will not use.

  • The store ships to Brazil with taxes collected at checkout. For a single low-value item from a platform certified under Remessa Conforme, direct shipping can cost less and clear faster.
  • You buy from the US once a year. A friend’s suitcase or a relative’s spare room may do. A relative will not consolidate, scan, or sign for a courier at 2 PM on a Tuesday, but for one box a year that may not matter.
  • The item is cheap and bulky. Freight plus tax will exceed the saving. Buy it locally.
  • You only need letters forwarded for a few months after a move within the US. USPS change of address is free and may be enough. We compare the two in USPS vs. private mail forwarding.

The service earns its fee when you shop American stores regularly, when the stores you want do not serve Brazil, when your purchases are valuable enough to need a person signing for them, or when you are an American abroad who needs US mail read within a day of arrival. Our mail forwarding service and mailbox rental pages describe the address itself in more depth.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How does package forwarding from the USA to Brazil work?

You rent a US street address with a personal suite number. US stores deliver your orders there by domestic shipping. Our staff receive, log, and store the packages, combine them into one carton when you ask, prepare the customs declaration with your CPF, and ship to Brazil by the carrier you choose.

Can I get a US address for shipping to Brazil if I live in Brazil?

Yes. You do not need to be a US citizen or resident. You choose a plan and complete USPS Form 1583 with two forms of ID, which can be notarized online from Brazil. A Brazilian passport is accepted as primary identification. Your address is then issued for use at US stores.

Will I pay import tax in Brazil on forwarded packages?

Almost always. Brazil charges federal import tax plus state ICMS on imported goods, calculated on the value of the goods and the freight together. Rates and thresholds have changed several times since 2023. Confirm the current figures with Receita Federal before buying, and budget for tax on every shipment.

Does Remessa Conforme apply to packages sent through a forwarder?

Generally no. Remessa Conforme covers purchases made through e-commerce platforms certified by Receita Federal, which collect Brazilian taxes at checkout. A carton forwarded from your personal US address is assessed on arrival under the standard rules. Verify the current program terms with Receita Federal, since they have been revised more than once.

Do I need a CPF to receive a package from the United States?

Yes. Brazilian customs requires the recipient’s CPF, or a CNPJ for a company, on inbound international shipments. We include it on the customs declaration and label data. The recipient name should match the name registered to that CPF, or the parcel can be held at clearance.

Which carrier is best for shipping from the USA to Brazil?

It depends on the box. USPS, delivered in Brazil by Correios, is usually cheapest for light, low-value parcels but clears customs more slowly. DHL, FedEx, and UPS cost more, clear through their own brokers, and are more predictable for electronics, higher-value batches, and anything urgent.

How much does consolidation save on shipping to Brazil?

Consolidation typically cuts international shipping cost 30% to 40% per batch, because you pay one base charge and ship less empty space. On the Brazil lane you also pay one customs clearance or Correios dispatch fee instead of several. Consolidation is free on the Silver and Gold plans.

What can I not ship to Brazil?

Common problems include perfume, aerosols, and loose lithium batteries, medicines and supplements in quantity, used or refurbished goods, certain wireless devices, weapons and replicas, and food or plant products. Several identical items can be treated as commercial. Check our prohibited commodities list and ask us before you buy.

What if a US store will not accept my Brazilian credit card?

Use our Personal Concierge service. For a flat $99.95 per purchase request, plus the cost of the goods, our US team places the order with the retailer on your behalf. The item is delivered to your suite and can be consolidated and forwarded with the rest of your packages.

Can American expats in Brazil use the address for bank and IRS mail?

Yes. Many of our customers in Brazil are Americans who use the address for bank cards, brokerage statements, and IRS letters. Mail scanning is free on the Silver and Gold plans, so you can read a notice as a PDF soon after it arrives. Confirm tax residency questions with a professional.
