Key Takeaways

  • You get a Massachusetts street address with your own suite number in Tewksbury, in the Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley area, near the I-495 and I-93 corridors. It is a registered Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA), not a P.O. Box.
  • Locals can pick up at the counter Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern. Everyone else runs the mailbox remotely by email alert, scan, and forwarding instruction. Many customers do both.
  • A CMRA address is a mailing address. It is not proof of Massachusetts residence for the RMV, it is not where your car is garaged for insurance, and it does not decide your tax domicile.
  • Massachusetts LLCs and corporations can use the address for business mail. The resident agent role is separate, and we offer that as its own service.
  • Three annual plans: Starter $330, Silver $450, Gold $595. Annual billing includes one bonus month.
  • USPS Form 1583, notarized with two IDs, is required before any CMRA can accept your mail. Online notarization is accepted.

The Service

What Massachusetts Mail Forwarding Is

It is a private mailbox at a staffed commercial building, with people who receive your mail and then do what you tell them to do with it. You put our Tewksbury street address and your suite number on your accounts. Carriers deliver to our counter. We log each piece and email you the same business day it is processed. From there, each item goes one of three ways: it waits for you to pick it up, it gets opened and scanned to PDF at your request, or it ships to whatever address you give us, in Massachusetts, in another state, or in any of 220+ countries and territories.

The industry uses several names for this. “Mail forwarding” describes the shipping half. “Virtual mailbox” and “Massachusetts virtual mail” describe the scanning and remote-management half. “Virtual address” and “virtual business address” describe the address itself. They are the same mailbox seen from different angles, and our pages on the mail forwarding service, mailbox rental, and the virtual address each go deeper on one angle.

What “CMRA” means and why it matters

A Commercial Mail Receiving Agency is a business registered with the Postal Service to accept mail on behalf of customers. The registration is the reason the address works: USPS knows your mail is supposed to arrive at our building under your name. It is also the reason for the paperwork. Before any CMRA can hand you a single envelope, USPS requires a notarized Form 1583 with two forms of ID. Our plain-English explainer on what a CMRA is covers the rules, and the USPS Form 1583 guide walks through the form line by line.

What is included on every plan

  • A real street address and personal suite number in Tewksbury, Massachusetts.
  • Receiving from USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, and Amazon, signed for by staff.
  • A free email alert on every arrival.
  • Included storage: 30, 60, or 90 days depending on plan.
  • Forwarding on request at discounted USPS, FedEx, UPS, and DHL rates.
  • Handling by background-checked staff, in our own building. We do not outsource mail to a third party.

Scanning and package consolidation are free on Silver and Gold, and available as paid add-ons on Starter. Details are in the pricing section below and on our mail scanning service page.

Customers

Who in Massachusetts Uses It

Six groups make up most of our Massachusetts accounts. They share one problem: the place they sleep and the place their mail should go are not the same place, at least not all year.

Boston-area professionals

Apartment lobbies lose packages, and leases turn over every September 1. A fixed address outside the building means a new apartment no longer means thirty address changes. Consultants and travel nurses use scans to read mail from the road.

Cape Cod and second-home owners

A house in Chatham or Wellfleet that sits empty from October to May should not be collecting tax bills and insurance notices. One year-round address covers the primary home and the seasonal one. See the Cape Cod section.

Students leaving Massachusetts

Graduates leave behind a dorm or an Allston sublet that still receives their bank mail, final utility bills, and W-2s. International students often want a US address that outlasts the visa. Our guide to a US address for international students covers that case.

Massachusetts LLC owners

Home-based owners who do not want a home address on invoices, the website, and state records. The address handles business mail, and our separate Massachusetts registered agent service handles legal notices.

People moving out of state

A job in Texas or a retirement in Florida does not end your Massachusetts paper trail overnight. Pension administrators, a former employer, the town, and a closing attorney may all write for a year or more. Snowbirds have their own playbook in mail forwarding for snowbirds.

People moving abroad

US banks and brokerages want a US mailing address, and USPS will not forward a change of address to every foreign destination in a useful way. Expats keep the Massachusetts address and read their mail as PDFs. Start with the moving abroad checklist.

A seventh group is smaller but steady: adult children handling a parent’s mail, executors, and landlords who live elsewhere. For them the value is simple. Somebody reliable receives the envelope and tells them it arrived.

Two Ways to Use It

In-Person Pickup or Fully Remote

You can collect your mail at the counter, or never set foot in the building. Both are normal, and the plan price is the same.

Local pickup. The business center is staffed Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern. Customers from Tewksbury, Lowell, Andover, Billerica, Wilmington, and other towns along the I-495 and I-93 corridors tend to stop by on their own schedule, often after an email alert tells them something worth the trip has arrived. There is no forwarding postage on mail you collect yourself.

Fully remote. Customers in Boston proper, on the Cape, in the Berkshires, out of state, or overseas usually never visit. They open the account online, notarize Form 1583 by video, and manage every item from the alert email: scan this, hold that, ship the rest on Friday.

Mixing the two

Most local customers end up doing both. A contractor in Dracut picks up weekly from March to December, then has everything forwarded to Florida for the winter. A Cambridge researcher collects packages in person but has letters scanned, because the letters are the urgent part and the packages can wait for a Saturday errand. Nothing about the account changes when you switch. You change the instruction.

What the hours mean for you

We are honest about the limits. Pickup is business hours only, with no lobby access at night or on weekends. If you need to reach a box at 9:00 PM on a Sunday, a USPS PO Box in a post office with a 24-hour lobby does that better than we do. What the staffed model gives you in exchange is a person who signs for the FedEx envelope at 2:00 PM on a Tuesday while you are at work.

Honest Comparison

Compared With a USPS PO Box and The UPS Store

A PO Box is the cheapest way to receive letters if you live nearby. A UPS Store mailbox and our mailbox are the same legal category, a CMRA street address, and differ mostly in how much remote service comes with it. Here is how the three line up, described qualitatively, because PO Box fees vary by post office and box size, and The UPS Store locations are individually owned franchises that set their own prices and services.

If you want the longer version, we wrote a full virtual mailbox vs. PO Box comparison, and a separate piece on USPS vs. private mail forwarding.

How to choose between the three

Ask where you will be when the mail arrives. If the answer is “ten minutes from the post office, and it is only letters,” rent the PO Box and keep the difference. If the answer is “near a UPS Store I like, and I will always pick up myself,” that store is a reasonable choice, and you should ask the owner directly what they charge and whether they scan or forward. If the answer is “not nearby,” “not sure,” or “in another country,” you need a mailbox built around remote handling. That is the one thing we have done since 2007.

The Free Option

When Free USPS Forwarding Is Enough

For a one-time move from one Massachusetts home to another, the free USPS change of address is usually all you need. File it on the official USPS change of address page, update your senders over the following months, and you are done. We say this to callers every week.

The USPS tool stops fitting in a few predictable situations:

  • You have no stable destination. A change of address needs a “to” address. People between leases, traveling, or going abroad often do not have one.
  • You receive packages from private carriers. USPS forwards USPS mail. A UPS, FedEx, DHL, or Amazon package goes to the address printed on the label.
  • The arrangement is long term. USPS forwarding is temporary by design. A permanent move buys you a limited window, and then mail starts going back to senders.
  • You need to see mail, not just receive it. Forwarded mail arrives days later, unopened, wherever you said you would be. A scan reaches you wherever you actually are.

The practical pattern is to use both. Open the mailbox, file one USPS change of address from your old home to the new Tewksbury address to catch the senders you forgot, then update the important senders directly. The step-by-step mechanics are in how mail forwarding works.

Massachusetts Specifics

Massachusetts Rules: RMV, Insurance, Voting

A CMRA address is a mailing address, not a residence. Massachusetts agencies and insurers care about that difference, and you should too. Use our address where an organization asks where to send mail. Give your true residential or garaging address where it asks where you live or where the car is kept. Most forms have both lines for exactly this reason.

Registry of Motor Vehicles

The RMV records a residential address and, separately, a mailing address. A commercial mailbox can serve as the mailing address so your renewal notices and registration paperwork reach you. It is not proof of Massachusetts residency, and the RMV publishes its own list of documents that are. If you have moved out of Massachusetts, the honest answer is usually that you need a license in your new state, not a Massachusetts mailing address. Check the current rules with the Massachusetts RMV on Mass.gov before you rely on any summary, including this one.

Auto and home insurance

Massachusetts auto policies are rated in part on where the vehicle is principally garaged. Your insurer needs that real location. Giving a mailbox address as the garaging address to get a lower rate is misrepresentation, and it can put a claim at risk. What you can do is ask the insurer to send bills and notices to your mailing address while the garaging address stays accurate. The same logic applies to a homeowner’s policy on a seasonal property: the insured location is the house, and the mailing address is wherever you will read the renewal.

Voter registration, jury duty, and town mail

You register to vote where you reside. Massachusetts forms allow a separate mailing address, and that is the correct place for a CMRA address. Jury summonses and the annual town census follow the same pattern. If you have permanently left the state, a mailing address does not keep you on the rolls properly. Ask your city or town clerk, or the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Elections Division, how to update your status.

Where you might use the addressDoes a CMRA mailing address work? What to know
Bank and credit card statementsUsually yes, as the mailing addressBanks are required to keep a residential address on file too. Give both

None of this is legal advice. It is what we have seen work and fail at our counter since 2007. For anything with consequences, confirm with the agency itself or with a professional.

Business Owners

Massachusetts LLCs: Office Address vs. Resident Agent

A Massachusetts LLC deals with at least three addresses, and they do different jobs. The business mailing address is where customers, vendors, banks, and the IRS write to you. The office address on your state filing is where the company’s records are kept. The resident agent’s address is where lawsuits and official state notices get delivered. One building can serve more than one of these, but they are not interchangeable.

The resident agent

Massachusetts requires every LLC and corporation registered with the Secretary of the Commonwealth to keep an agent for service of process with a street address in the Commonwealth. The LLC statute calls this person or company the “resident agent.” The rest of the country says “registered agent,” and you will see both terms on Massachusetts forms. The agent has to be reachable at that street address during business hours, and the agent has to consent to the appointment. A mailbox subscription on its own does not make anyone your agent. Our guide to Massachusetts registered agent requirements explains who qualifies, and we provide the role as a standalone Massachusetts registered agent service. See current pricing on that page. The Gold Plan is built to pair with it.

The office address on your filing

The certificate of organization and the annual report ask for a street address of the company’s office in Massachusetts where its records are maintained. A PO Box number does not satisfy a request for a street address. Many home-based owners use a commercial street address for business mail to keep a home address off public search results. Whether a given address is acceptable for the records-office line in your situation is a question for the Corporations Division or your attorney, and we cover the options carefully in using a virtual address for a Massachusetts LLC.

Everything else a business address does

Invoices, your website footer, vendor accounts, merchant statements, returned merchandise, checks from customers. This is the daily work of a “virtual business address in Massachusetts,” and it is where a staffed address earns its fee. A customer check that arrives Tuesday generates an alert Tuesday. A scan can go to your bookkeeper. More than one company can receive mail at one mailbox if each is listed on your Form 1583. The wider picture is in our business mailbox guide.

Tax Caution

Domicile and Massachusetts Taxes: A Caution

A mailing address does not make you a Massachusetts resident for tax purposes, and it does not stop you from being one. People ask us this from both directions. Some have moved to New Hampshire or Florida and worry that keeping a Massachusetts mailbox will keep them on the Department of Revenue’s radar. Others have moved abroad and hope a Massachusetts address preserves some form of residency. Neither is how it works.

In general terms, Massachusetts looks at domicile, meaning the place you treat as your true permanent home, and at whether you keep a permanent place of abode in the state and spend a large part of the year here. The evidence is the life you actually lead: where you live, work, keep your family, register your car, vote, see your doctor. A suite number at a business center is a small fact among many. It is where your mail goes.

That said, consistency matters. If you have changed domicile to another state, change the things that signal domicile: license, voter registration, vehicle registration, the address on your tax returns. Then the Massachusetts mailbox reads as what it is, a logistics choice. If you leave everything pointing at Massachusetts and only claim otherwise on a tax form, the mailbox is not your problem, but it will not help. The Massachusetts Department of Revenue publishes residency guidance, and a tax professional should review any move that involves real money. Our background piece on state residency, taxes, and your mail explains the concepts without pretending to be advice.

Seasonal Homes

Cape Cod, the Islands, and Second Homes

A seasonal house needs a mailing address that is staffed in the months when the house is not. Searches for “virtual mailboxes Cape Cod” usually come from owners who have learned this the hard way: a water bill that went unpaid at an empty cottage, or a full mailbox telling everyone on the street that nobody is home until Memorial Day.

We are not on the Cape, and we will not pretend a drive from Orleans to Tewksbury is a casual errand. Cape, Islands, and Berkshires owners use us remotely. The town tax collector, the insurer, the utility, and the septic company all write to one Tewksbury address year-round. You get an alert, ask for a scan if it looks important, and have the rest forwarded in a batch to wherever you are living that month.

What to move to the mailbox, and what to leave

Move anything with a deadline: property tax bills, excise bills, insurance renewals, association notices, utility statements, rental registration paperwork if you rent the house out. Leave anything that must physically arrive at the property, such as a heating oil delivery ticket or a parcel for a tenant. Some Cape towns have limited home delivery and many residents use a PO Box at the village post office. That works well if you are there all year. It works poorly for the owner who is there ten weeks a year, because a PO Box does not tell you what is inside it.

A worked example

A couple lives in Arlington and owns a house in Dennis that they rent by the week in summer. Before, tax and insurance mail went to Dennis, rental inquiries went to Arlington, and two bills were paid late in three years. Now every sender for both houses has the Tewksbury address. On the Silver Plan, both spouses are named users, letters are scanned at no extra charge, and physical mail is forwarded to Arlington about once a month. The plan is $450 for the year. One avoided late penalty does not pay for all of it, but one missed insurance renewal on a coastal property would cost far more than a decade of the plan.

Moving Away

Leaving Massachusetts but Keeping the Address

You can keep a Massachusetts mailing address after you move out of state or abroad, and for a transition period it is often the sensible thing to do. What you are keeping is a place for mail to land, not a legal residence.

Moving to another state

The first year after a move generates more Massachusetts mail than people expect. A final excise tax bill. A W-2 from the employer you left. A state tax refund or notice. A security deposit check from a landlord. Mail from a closing attorney. If your new housing is temporary, send all of it to one stable address and have it forwarded when you settle. Later, once every sender has your new address, you may not need us, and that is fine. Plans run for a term and you can let one end.

Moving abroad

This group tends to stay for years, because the need does not go away. US financial institutions generally expect a US mailing address and may restrict accounts without one. Replacement debit cards are mailed to the address on file. Some IRS and Social Security notices still arrive only on paper. Overseas customers read almost everything as scans and forward only originals: new cards, checks, official documents. Packages from US retailers are combined into one shipment, and consolidation typically cuts international shipping cost by 30% to 40% per batch. See the international shipping savings guide for the arithmetic, and keeping a US bank account while living abroad for the banking side.

Students and recent graduates

Massachusetts has a very large student population, and every May thousands of people leave an address that will keep receiving their mail. A graduate heading to a job in another city, then another apartment six months later, benefits from one address that survives both moves. International graduates use it to keep a US bank account and to receive tax documents the following winter. A Starter Plan covers this. If your parents have a stable home address and will reliably photograph your mail, that is free and also works.

Getting Started

How to Set It Up, Step by Step

Setup is four steps on your side. The only one that takes real effort is the notarized form, and online notarization means you can do it from a kitchen table in Brookline or an apartment in Lisbon.

Choose a plan

Pick Starter, Silver, or Gold on the plans page. If you are remote and expect letters you will need to read, Silver’s free scanning usually makes it the cheaper choice over a year.

Complete Form 1583

USPS requires the form, two IDs, and a notary. Sign at our counter if you are local, or use a remote online notary. List every adult and every business that will receive mail. The blank form is on the USPS website.

Get your address

Once your paperwork is verified we issue your street address and suite number. Write it exactly as given, suite number included, so mail is sorted to your account without delay.

Update senders

Start with banks, card issuers, insurers, the IRS, and your employer. File a USPS change of address to catch the rest. Then manage each arrival from the alert email.

A sender checklist for Massachusetts residents

  • Banks, credit unions, credit cards, brokerage and retirement accounts.
  • Health, auto, home, and umbrella insurers (mailing address only, keep garaging and property addresses accurate).
  • IRS and Massachusetts Department of Revenue, using their own change-of-address procedures.
  • RMV mailing address line.
  • City or town: excise tax, property tax, water and sewer, if they allow a separate mailing address.
  • Employer payroll and any former employers who owe you a W-2.
  • Pension administrators, Social Security, Medicare.
  • Doctors, dentists, and the patient billing offices of any hospital system you use.
  • Online retailers and subscription boxes.
  • For businesses: payment processors, vendors, and the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Corporations Division if the change affects your filed information.

The Math

What a Year Costs, Worked Out

Your yearly cost is the plan price plus whatever postage you choose to spend. For a local customer who picks up, the second number is usually zero.

Starter, local pickup. $330 for 13 months works out to about $25.38 per month of service, or roughly 83 cents a day. There is no postage, because you collect your own mail.

Silver, remote. $450 for 13 months is about $34.62 per month. Scanning is included, so reading your mail adds nothing. Postage applies only to the originals you want in hand. Many remote customers forward a small batch once a month or once a quarter and let the rest sit as PDFs.

Gold, business. $595 for 13 months is about $45.77 per month, shared by up to five users. For an LLC owner, the fair comparison is not a PO Box. It is the cost of any other way to get a staffed commercial address in Greater Boston, which normally means a lease or a coworking membership.

Silver vs. Starter. The gap is $120 a year. If you expect to need scans or consolidation more than occasionally, Silver’s included services cover that gap. If you live fifteen minutes away and will open your own envelopes, Starter is the right plan, and we will tell you so.

We do not quote forwarding prices on this page because they depend on weight, size, destination, and carrier, and they change. You see the rate before anything ships.

Avoid These

Mistakes We See Most Often

Most problems with a Massachusetts virtual address come from the first two weeks, and nearly all of them are preventable.

Leaving the suite number off

The street address gets mail to our building. The suite number gets it to you. Some online checkout forms drop the second address line or reject the “#” symbol. Put the suite on the first line after the street if you have to, and check the confirmation email.

Leaving a name off Form 1583

We can only release mail to people and businesses listed on the form. A spouse, an adult child, an LLC, and a DBA each need to be listed. Mail for an unlisted name gets held while we sort it out with you, which is a delay you can avoid on day one.

Using the mailbox as a residential address

Covered above, and worth repeating because the consequences are real. RMV residency, insurance garaging, and voter registration need your actual address. Commercial addresses are flagged in the databases that banks and agencies use, so the substitution does not go unnoticed for long.

Expecting the mailbox to be your resident agent automatically

The mailbox receives business mail. Service of process goes to the resident agent named in your state filing. If you want us in that role, sign up for the registered agent service and make the filing with the Corporations Division. Related reading: certified mail and legal notices explained.

Waiting until the week you leave

Notarization, sender updates, and the first test delivery take a little time. Open the account a few weeks before a move, a semester’s end, or the day you close up the Cape house. Order one inexpensive item to the new address and watch the alert arrive. Then you know it works.

Ordering restricted goods

Carriers and customs authorities restrict certain items, and international forwarding adds its own rules. Read the list of prohibited commodities before you ship batteries, liquids, or anything unusual to the address.

Straight Talk

Who Should Skip This Service

Some people who call us should not become customers, and we tell them. If you moved once, within Massachusetts, to a home you plan to stay in, file the free USPS change of address. If you receive only letters and live near a post office, rent a PO Box. If a parent or sibling with a stable address is willing to receive your mail and will actually tell you about it, that costs nothing, and for a short stint away it is fine.

The service is worth paying for when at least one of these is true: you are away from your mail for long stretches, you receive packages from private carriers, you run a business from home, you own a property that sits empty, or a missed letter would cost you real money. Most people who find this page by searching for mail forwarding in Massachusetts or Boston have at least one of those going on. If you are unsure, ask us. A five-minute conversation usually settles it, and the vocabulary is all defined in our mail forwarding glossary.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Massachusetts mail forwarding?

It is a private mailbox with a real Massachusetts street address at a staffed facility. Staff receive your mail and packages from all carriers, email you when each item arrives, and then hold it for pickup, scan it, or forward it to any address you choose, in the US or in 220+ countries and territories.

Where is the address located?

The address is at a staffed business center in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, in the Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley area near the I-495 and I-93 corridors. You receive the full street address and your personal suite number when your account is set up and your Form 1583 is verified.

Can I pick up my mail in person?

Yes. The facility is staffed Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern. Many local customers pick up most of the year and switch to forwarding when they travel. There is no forwarding postage on mail you collect yourself.

Is this a Boston address?

No. It is a Tewksbury, Massachusetts street address, north of Boston. People searching for mail forwarding in Boston use it because it is a genuine Massachusetts commercial address they can manage remotely. If you specifically need “Boston, MA” printed in your address, this is not that.

Can I use the address for my Massachusetts driver’s license?

Only as a mailing address. A CMRA address is not proof of Massachusetts residency, and the RMV requires your actual residential address. The same applies to auto insurance, where the garaging address must be the real location of the vehicle. Confirm current requirements with the Massachusetts RMV.

Can my Massachusetts LLC use this address?

Yes, for business mail, invoices, vendors, and banking correspondence. The resident agent for service of process is a separate legal role that must be formally appointed with the Secretary of the Commonwealth. We offer that role as a separate Massachusetts registered agent service. See current pricing on the service page.

How is this different from a USPS PO Box?

A PO Box is a locked compartment at a post office that generally receives USPS mail only, and you must go collect it. Our mailbox is a street address that accepts USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, and Amazon, sends you an alert for each item, and can scan or forward it. A PO Box costs less.

How is this different from a mailbox at The UPS Store?

Both are CMRA street addresses that accept all carriers and require Form 1583. UPS Store locations are individually owned, so prices and services such as scanning and forwarding vary by store. Our service is built around remote management: alerts on every item, scanning, consolidation, and international forwarding.

Does keeping a Massachusetts mailing address make me a Massachusetts resident for taxes?

A mailing address alone does not establish or prevent Massachusetts tax residency. The state looks at domicile and at the facts of where you actually live. Review Massachusetts Department of Revenue guidance and confirm your situation with a tax professional, especially if you recently moved out of state.

What does it cost?

Starter is $330 per year, Silver is $450 per year, and Gold is $595 per year. Annual billing includes one bonus month, so you receive 13 months of service. Three-month and six-month terms are also available. Forwarding postage is billed separately at discounted carrier rates when you request a shipment.
